Written for the Goldner Quartet on their 25th anniversary in 2020 and the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven, Ode to Whimsy is part of a collection of miniature string quartet variations inspired in some way by Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Each variation is approximately 45 seconds long, written by a different composer. The quartet may choose in which order to perform the variations. The entire set was commissioned by the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, Queensland. COVID-19 prevented its premiere in 2020; the works will be performed in July 2022.
